Dads & Grills

Grills and barbecue pits are an essential part of every household outdoor equipment inventory.  I can’t think of many things better than relaxing with family or friends in the backyard grilling a variety of meats and veggies.  There really are not many smells as enjoyable as those that emanate from meat cooking over fire and steel.  Grills really are the centerpiece of outdoor life, so it’s no wonder why prices for grills and pits can be very expensive.

When Is The Best Time To Buy A Grill?

So when is the best time to buy a grill.  Short answer, the end of summer.  When the Fall season draws near, outdoor equipment will begin to drop in price, and in some instances prices will fall like the season.  For example, a Weber Spirit E-210 Gas Grill that normally retails for $399.99 went to a lucky shopper at Target for just $119.98 ($113.98 with Target Red Card).  That’s correct, they got it for 70% off retail plus hopefully they were smart enough to use or get a Target Red Card to get an additional 5% off.  Another example is the Char-Broil 2 Burner Performance TRU-Infrared Gas Grill which retails for $249.99 was carried out the door for $74.98, another 70% off grill from one of my favorite stores for deals, Target.  If you are not impressed because these are only 2 burner grills Target also had the Stok Quattro 4-Burner Gas Grill – Silver that retails for $299.99 on clearance for $89.98 ($85.48 Target Red Card), another 70% off grill.

You will undoubtably find deals at Lowes, Home Depot, and Sears stores but I have been unable to verify deals greater than 50% off retail at these retailers and here is why.  Target is a variety store, as such their seasonal department is relatively small and takes up less than 5% of any given store.  When a given season is in season you will find most products in inventory at the manufactures suggested retail price.  As the season begins to peak there will be various sales typically 10% to 20% off MSRP.  As the next holiday’s or season’s merchandise begins to be rolled out on the floor the stores need to make room.  They make this room by having steeper sales or clearance sales to move the remaining past season’s products off the floor.  This is where smart shoppers can really clean house.  These economic factors are also in play at Lowes, Home Depot, and Sears, the difference is that larger stores have more space to consolidate offseason merchandise so there is no urgency to clearance the items.

I already own a 4-Burner Gas Grill so I was not able to enjoy reaping the benefits of finding these amazing deals on grills but I did buy a sweet BakerStone Pizza Oven Box Kit that retails for $139.97 for 70% off and I also picked up a Stok Gridiron Portable Gas Grill that retails for $159.99 for 50% off.  While I paid $79.98 some Target stores have them at 70%, that’s $47.98.  The problem is you need to find them, the best way to find the deals without chasing them all around town is to use the BrickSeek website.  This will give you an up to date inventory and all you need is DPCI Code and a Zip code.  Enter both and it will show you the current inventory and price of the product, and trust me, prices can be different from store to store.

Fall is the best time to buy a grill, but be prepared to stalk items and pull the trigger to buy the item when it is closest to what you are willing to pay.  If you wait too long someone else will steal your deal and you will have to wait until next grilling season.

Money Saving Tip

Don’t forget you also get an additional 5% off if you buy anything with  a Target Red Card.  Remember the Target Red Card is not a Credit Card, it is a debit card to your bank account.  The Target Red Card is connected to your checking account and each purchase is a debit from your checking account.  I did not know about the Red Card until my wife got one and we use it for everything we buy at Target.  Another benefit of the card is you get an extra 30 days on the return policy.  I save 5% on every purchase, have 60 days to return, win, win!  Learn more about it at the Target Red Card information site.
