Healthy Meal On The Run: Protein Energy Smoothie

Sometimes the demands of fatherhood can really challenge our time management skills.  Okay let me be honest, when I had one child it was a challenge, now that I have two children it sometimes seems nearly impossible.  Family, work, other priorities are all battling for my time.

It’s not every day I can go for a bike ride, jog, or hit the gym, that’s why eating right is more important now than ever.  Not only can eating right be the answer to better health, but it can give you the energy you need to keep up with the kids as well as stay sharp and focused for everything else.

It’s one thing to want to eat healthy, it’s another to whip up a healthy meal that taste great and is quick to make.  For a quick and healthy meal that you can eat anytime try a Protein Energy Smoothie.

Typical Daddy: Protein Energy Smoothie

It’s one thing to want to eat healthy, it’s another to whip up a healthy meal that taste great and is quick to make.  For a quick and healthy meal that you can eat anytime try a Protein Energy Smoothie.

Ingredients

-1 Banana

-1/2 cup of Spinach

-1 teaspoon of Psyllium husk

-1 serving of protein (Egg White, Whey, or Veggie Protein)

-3/4 cup of crushed ice

-water

Directions

  • Grab a drinking container or blenderand
  • Break up the banana and put it in the container.
  • Add the spinach, pack it down if needed.  Remember to always wash your vegetables, especially when consuming them raw.
  • Add your protein powder.
  • Add a teaspoon of Psyllium Husk, make sure it’s not flavored and that it’s unsweetened.
  • Add 3/4 cup of ice.
  • Next add water, you will start with about 1/2 cup to 3/4 cup.
  • Grab the immersion blender and push it at least half way down before turning on the blender.  If you start blending before the immersion blender is halfway down the container you will make a mess.  Slowly work the blender down to the bottom of the container, it will take about 10 to 20 seconds to blend all ingirdents.  Depending on the protein you use you may have some residue stick to the walls of the container.  If this happens simply rub the walls of the container with the blender.
  • If you want a less thick smoothie just add some water and blend  for a couple of seconds.  Lastly, drink straight from the container or pour it into drink ware of your choice.  Enjoy.

Things To Consider

All protein powders taste different, some are flat out gross while others are so good you might think you are actually drinking a high calorie high fat milkshake.  I use Jay Robb Egg White Protein Chocolate – 12 oz.  You get two 12oz bags for about $50.  It’s money well worth it and you will go through both bags.  I swear this stuff taste so good I actually crave it while exercising.  I also use Jay Robb Whey Protein but it’s no where near as tasty as the Egg-White Protein powder.

Psyllium Husk comes in different variations.  Some will have sweetener, and citrus flavoring for individuals who like to mix it into a glass of water.  When you are mixing Psyllium Husk with other flavors found in protein powders it can cause an off flavor.  It’s best to use unflavored and unsweetened Psyllium Husk brand. I use KONSYL PHARMACEUTICALS Original Formula, 15.9 Ounce which runs about $15 but it lasts awhile, approximately 90 servings in the container.  There are plenty of other brands but this one has worked best for me.

Immersion blenders a a must as far as kitchen equipment goes, they are easy to clean and easier to use.  I use a Cuisinart I bought about three years ago and it’s still going strong.  It you don’t have one consider buying one.  It helps keep the whole production of making a smoothie quick and easy with no fuss, and it you get an immersion blender with its own blending cup like the KitchenAid KHB1231 2-Speed Hand Blender you will get a container that’s deep enough to handle all your ingredients for this recipe.
